The Financial Brand’s recent article on TD Bank’s new mascot raised two questions in my mind:

  1. What the hell were they thinking?
  2. What the hell did they pay somebody to come up with that?

I hope they didn’t pay a lot, because I’m happy to give that kind of advice away for free. So I’ve picked four lucky banks for whom I will make mascot recommendations:

PNC: PiNCh the Lobster

Bank of New York: Boney the Skeleton

Flushing Savings Bank: Tommy the Toilet

Bank of Kremlin Okla.: Nikita the Dictator

Just saved some banks a ton of dough, didn’t I?

    I have never met a mascot I didn’t like.

There is only one likely place to put these awful attempts at promotion: the Island of Misfit Marketers. Yes, sad to say, but Kirby Kangaroo, Dollar Dog and even the ol San Diego Chicken can all be placed in my category of marketing ideas that came about because you have too big a budget and not enough to spend it on. Many an inturn or over enthusiastic teller has suffered heat stroke in these hotter than h-e double hockey sticks costumes. They are a danger to health and frightened children everywhere.

Let this blog serve as a warning to all who would be considered marketeers. You will be judged by the quality of your mascot, or lack there of. Mr Shevlin, I urge you as a public service to continue to adjudicate these furry, fuzzy, inflatable and mostly trite attempts at drawing attention to one’s brand.
