Ron,

You are right on the money. I wrote along a similar vein about a month or so ago on my concern about the bank bashing campaigns some credit union marketers have engaged in http://www.inetsolution.com/turnleft/post/Bashing-Banks-Is-this-A-Smart-Strategy-for-Credit-Unions.aspx

Your point about America loving to find new villains to crucify is not only true, but also a point that I suspect many marketers are not considering as they continue pouring fuel onto the anti-bank fire. Considering that many average consumers do not recognize a difference between banks and credit unions (as Sarah Cooke suggest http://www.cutimes.com/Exclusives/2010/3/Pages/Exclude-the-Credit-Union-to-Save-the-Credit-Union.aspx), the anti-bank propaganda could have unintended regulatory consequences. Bob shares some insight in this comment http://www.inetsolution.com/turnleft/post/Bashing-Banks-Is-this-A-Smart-Strategy-for-Credit-Unions.aspx#id_dd836244-4137-4fff-a95b-2e48f19a1cd0

I've read numerous stories this week discussing the current administration's efforts to capitalize on the negative press against Goldman Sachs to try to catapult financial reform policies through the senate. I cannot predict ultimately how the final banking reform bills will change the landscape for credit unions, but I am quite certain that the regulation will be felt by big and small institutions alike. Sometimes when you keep adding fuel to an already hot fire it grows out of control and you get burned.

As you've stated, the energy spent talking down the competition could be better spent improving ones own self.

Good post, Ron.
